Amidst Yellowstone National Park's 150th anniversary, Indigenous artists deeply connected to their ancestral land, share projects steeped in traditional ecological knowledge in an act of rematriation, and ceremony. Here, the land itself cradles their memories, recognizing them as integral threads in its rich tapestry.

How the Land Remembers Us

Following the Great Japanese Earthquake, parents Miho and Hiro Yokobori abandoned their life in Tokyo to embrace a new beginning in the isolated mountain community of Kawakami. Kentaro’s birth—the first birth in the village in 25 years—injects a renewed sense of hope and vitality, countering Japan’s troubling trend of an ageing population and record low birth rates. Halji village, in north-western Nepal, is a living museum which houses an 11th-century Buddhist monastery. Unfortunately, the monastery lies just six kilometers below a dangerous glacier, the source of recent destructive flooding.
